Project 1 - Part 2 / Knitting for Kas

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 10:26am 0 Comments

My progress so far are six completed squares, five green, one white and one just started. Hopefully I will get a couple more done tonight. It is a real joy and very relaxing to sit down and work for this wonderful cause and the children involved. The squares are knitted in different patterns, all of which can be used either back or front, the patterns are the same either side, which makes assembling them much easier. I left a fairly long tail on each one of the squares and tied them up in…

Project 1 - My first Kas Knitting Project

For my first Kas Project I have chosen to knit 35 squares, needed for a full blanket. The colours I have chosen for this project will reflect the season of Spring, which is upon us now, even though it doesn't feel like it yet. I have chosen a light green, corresponding to green grasses and plants, coming to life after a long, cold and dark winter. Next I chose white in correspondence to purity, cleanliness, freshness, and brightness, as the days are getting finally longer and the whole world…

Forgot to say: I loved your photos. The green and white are so refreshing and very Spring-like.

As to Wales...I did all my university at UCW Aberystwyth. I had Welsh neighbours here in France, but they've sold their house and moved back to Cardiff.

Hi again.

I don't make my soft toys. We have a local recycling centre and they sell the toys there at 0.50€ per toy whatever its size. I wash them in the machine when I get them home and they turn out really nicely.

I was a Granny square addict for a long time and had to find a new outlet when all our beds had afghans! KAS not only provided this outlet, but taught me to do other things than Grannies. Where else can you do something you love and feel really good about it? Also, you get to become part of a very friendly and helpful network.

Greetings Maria from across The Pond in the middle of Canada! Welcome to a worldwide network of loving happy people helping African Aids orphans. Glad to have you with us.  It's so heartening to know that in this global, often so impersonal world, we're actually making a difference, a REAL difference, in the lives of these children. Check out the Forum, above, for the various discussion threads, and Photos for all the lovely photos of members' work and Groups where you can join groups from countries around the world.

The Featured Discussions grouping (in the Forum section) show the most important subjects at the moment, latest challenges, latest news etc. I also recommend the Café KAS Discussion section, which contains the Our Furry Companions and Yarnaholics threads. I am so much a Yarnaholic!  Thanks again for helping the AIDS orphans in Africa!

It's a lot of fun doing a whole blanket. I've done 2 now and am waiting for the end of the postal strike to be able to send them. Knitting with a definite aim seems to make things go faster. The first one I did was a real load of fun to do. I call it my psychedelic blanket because of the colours.

Good luck with your 35 squares. Make sure you post a photo when it's ready.

Hello Maria, so glad you have joined us. Keeping the children in South Africa warm has brought together a world-wide group of caring knitters and crocheters.

If you haven’t already, please read through the welcome message on the forum main page for helpful hints and things that might interest you. The FAQ category should answer any general questions you may have. If not, please ask.

KasSnippets has been e-published and I thought you might find it interesting to read.

Every month, we list the squares, beanies and tops that have arrived in South Africa. To find the ‘Squares lists’ please click the Forum tab [in the toolbar above] then on “Tallies/Item Count” for an up-to-date listing.

We have a challenge for each month.  This is a fun way to try new colours, ideas or patterns. A theme is chosen, and if you wish, you may create something new and could be making a plain square using a new colour, a different stitch or trying a totally new way of knitting/ crocheting.  An 8”/20cm square is the perfect size for experimenting.

This month’s challenge is the Four Seasons.  What colours come to mind when you think about the seasons in your country ?   For me, here in Canada, winter will be blues, greys and whites.  Then we have the much anticipated spring with its pinks and bright greens.  Make as many squares as you like in the colours that remind you of your seasons.  Making the basic square is a wonderful way to relax and still help the children.  Plain Janes, as they are affectionately called, are the backbone of KAS.  Since it takes 35 squares to make one blanket, squares are needed all the time.

Enjoy !
