We just finished packing up 25 blankets and lots of hat and sent them on their way to South Africa. Unfortunately, the shipping was a whopping $884.Kathy and I will find a worthy cause here in the USA to which we can deliver our blankets. We will miss knitting for you, but we know folks closer to South Africa will pick up the slack.

You're such a loss, Judith and Kathy, but totally understandable. I'm so grateful we can send by sea mail from the UK.
I know it is sad! I’ll find a way to stay connected.
So sad to think that the postage costs will keep your beautiful work from South Africa, but it certainly understandable. But, I'm heartened to know that some small items, maybe hats and handwarmers, will still find their way to SA. May I suggest you try using poly mailers for shipping rather than boxes? They weigh much less, so it helps with shipping costs, even for small items. I've been using them for 12 years and have never had them break. Here are some on Amazon:

Other sizes are available, too. And in smaller quantities.
Thank you, Karen. Kathy and I will remain supporters of Knit A Square. I’ll probably be knitting hats and sending them because I have to do something with the little balls of yarn.
Oh girls that's a shame, but entirely understandable given the mailing costs. Your knitting is inspirational + will be missed. I'm pleased to hear you'll continue making items + that others will benefit Xx
We’re finding many places here in California where we can help disadvantaged mothers and children. Thanks for your suggestions
Women's refuges are good places to target for blankets.
No. We’ve inquired with private companies like DHL, Fed Ex, and UPS. Turns out the US Postal Service is the cheapest. But basically, it’s always about $150 per box.
Thats an incredible shipping bill is there no economy / seamail option?
