If anyone is interested in a crochet stitch that looks similar to the waves in this square, you might try this one: http://newstitchaday.com/how-to-crochet-the-2-color-wave-stitch/
I haven't tried it myself yet, but it looks like it will give a similar result.

What super waves! In the Patterns section, see bar above, there are several easy crochet patterns. People love the mitre squares in knit or crochet as you automatically get an 8' square square from them. Very artistic square, just lovely!

I'm sure I've made a similar looking wave in crochet, but don't have a link right now. Does anyone else have an easy pattern to follow for an 8 inch crochet block?
