Hello fellow knitters!

I am 42,German,  living in Upstate NY with my hubby and our two doggies. Our twin girls Sarah and Julia will be 20 years old soon. Sarah shares her time between ours and her boyfriends house, studying Graphic Design and working at my job part time (kennel worker at a big animal hospital) and Julia is studying International Studies in NYC (although she is spending a year in Spain right now). So I have a lot of time on my hands to knit. I always loved it, but never finished any project except scarves. Last year I learned that numerous Charities accept knitted squares for blankets, so I started knitting squares. Today I was looking for a way to actually sew them together to finally make a blanket, and I found your site. I wouldn't even have to make a whole blanket! I can just send on my squares and keep on knitting. I like to knit while watching my favorite shows on my laptop. I do have a physically challenging job working with dogs and all the cleaning it involves.... so I am thankful for my couch, but don't want to be just sitting there wasting oxygen ;).

My squares aren't really squares, they are more 5x7's. I saw something on this site that the measurements are now changed to 5x7's but on all the other flyers and instructions it says 8x8? Does anyone know which one is correct?

Well, hugs to all and I can't wait to meet you all and get started.

  • Hi Ute.  Glad to have you with us.  You'll probably enjoy chatting with the enthusiastic USA group http://forum.knit-a-square.com/groups found on this page.  As they say, they've adopted 3 creches now.  I too find sewing up a bunch of squares a right royal pain in the buttkus so I enjoy sending the squares too.  We have prisoners helping us now too, it's therapy for them to help others worse off than they are, plus keeps them busy, so the more squares the better.  The blankets are getting handed out as fast as they come in, usually along with a hat which some people love doing and I admit it makes a change from a square--do not panic, there are EASY ways to do hats, we have the patterns.

I'm married to a German and I'm a Brit, talk about culture clash...but we live in Canada where there's every nationality under the sun...I think we've got 10 nationalities alone in our immediate family. Oh, you could suggest to your daughter that if she's unsure what pattern to make her sweater in, she could whip up a few 8x8 squares in the various stitches, "just for practice", heh heh heh.

    • Jeanne, you made me laugh. I thought the same when my daughter was talking about the sweater. I think she followed my idea and is making a hat instead. She is taking quite a while to knit, but she is in college and has a part time job and a boyfriend, so she is a busy kid. She'll get around to it. I think she has knitted about 2 inches so far, which is not bad. I did sign on to the USA Forum. Such nice people everywhere in this knitting world, I am quite humbled!! I actually charged my camera, so I can get a nice picture before bagging up my squares. Tonight is Superbowl night, so I better get started getting my duckies in a row.

  • Wonderful to have you Ute! 8" x 8" please! The 5 x 7 equals how many squares in a blanket x

  • Hi I am also from upstate ny about 30 miles south of Albany.  Knitting is my passion and my 2012 challenge to myself was to learn as many stitch patterns as possible started by using stitch a day calendar which was a bit ambitious for me so decided on picking a stitch a week wasn't sure what I was going to do with the squares thought I'd eventually put  them together to make a blanket than I found this wonderful group and now know what I can do with my squares,

    Yay:)

    • Yes, right. For those of us not ambitious enough to delight in making sweaters and garments, I think squares in different patterns is a heaven sent!!! Since I posted my find all over facebook, I already have a neighbor asking how she can get involved in this. Even my daughter broke out her knitting needles again today and is pondering either making a sweater for herself.... or making squares for the blankets :)

      • Wonderful to hear that so many people are spreading the word about KAS. So glad you all joined us!!

  • That's the beauty of KAS Ute, this is not a charity 'hand-out', we are team working with the Ladies of Soweto Comfort club, which allows them the dignity of providing for the children - in fact, I think sewing the squares together so neatly is the hardest task of all!  Now you have found us please keep those squares coming whilst you watch TV - that's probably how most squares are produced!

  • Welcome, Ute! Glad you found us. You will find us a bunch of like-minded individuals from around the world who like to knot and crochet and are willing to help the children in South Africa with our skills. I am from suburban Philadelphia and have been to beautiful upstate NY many times. What a lovely place to live! So glad you joined us!

    • Oh, thank you Debbie!!! I am very excited about all this. I have spend the last hours knitting while reading up on the different posts in here. Very interesting, and fun!

  • Hi Ute Dancer...

A blanket when sewn together in South Africa will be 5 squares x 7 squares = 35 squares in total, but the size of each individual square is 8" x 8". I hope this clears it up for you. Happy knitting. :) Lovely to meet you, too.
