Since I am heading up the July challenge (Stripes, Textures and Zigzags), I decided to get ready early. I have basically finished the squares I wanted to do (can you tell I’m a worry-wart???)

So what do I do now? Well the answer came when I opened a cupboard and re-discovered the "bits bag".

Yikes - I guess I’m not as ready for July as I thought.

So here’s the thing ladies - I am inviting you to encourage me to keep going by entering a little contest (inspired by the one Heather Mensah did last year)

OBJECT - guess how many squares I can make out of this mess

HINT - all the yarn is worsted weight, and I will knit the squares using 4.5 mm needles. I cannot knit as fast as I can crochet and we all know yarn goes further in knitting that it does in crochet.

TIME FRAME - I will start making squares today and I will post all of the squares in the July challenge on July 28

UPDATES - I will not reveal how many squares I have done until the end, but I will probably post a photo of the basket now and then so you can see how it is going. You may choose to make your guess a little further into the contest.

PRIZES - a shopping trip to the KAS Shop.

1st prize.....I will treat the winner to a $25 shopping spree in the Shop, and she can choose whatever she wants to buy.

2nd prize.....  $10 to spend in the Shop to the person who makes more squares than I do

DISCLAIMER - there are absolutely NO guarantees that I will get to the bottom of the basket! Wish me luck.

  • Thank you, Anne, for 'moderating' this challenge, also.  It was great fun!!!

    • Anne I love the squares you got out of that basket. You are an inspiration for UMS's unmade scraps ! It just proves how much every little bit counts, a whole blanket's worth I am impressed. I am delighted Wendy won, she has made a fantastic  effort of squares for the challenge. Well done to both of you.

  • Well ... I just walked in the door, put down my bags (and bags and bags and bags), stepped over them, sat down at my computer and just HAD to check the KONTEST :)))

Congratulations Wendy!  What a fabulous array of gorgeous squares you made. Love your choices for spending your winnings :)

Sharon, thank you for your generous contribution.

Sharon B, your kindness will help all these beautiful squares get to their destinations.

Christine, what a wonderful bunch of squares you've produced!!

Anne, all I can say is GOOD FOR YOU!  A whole blanket!!  Thank you for this great kontest.  I really enjoyed it, and I have learned something through all of this.  I really need to brush up on my wheedling and coaxing skills.  Hm-m-m ... wonder if flattery would have worked??

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated.  The biggest winners here are the children who benefit from everyone's kindness and generosity.  xo

  • Well done Anne great work, as promised I will make a donation of $35 dollars as in bed Iat moment , I will do this first thing in the morning. brilliant squares .
  • Well done Wendy !  A beautiful array of squares and a good educated guess :-)   What fun to go shopping with someone's else's $$

Anne, thank you for a wonderful kontest.  It has been great fun and the children are the final winners.

    • Congratulations Wendy. Your squares are all beautiful as always..

And thank you Anne for a very motivating Kontest. I'm pleased that I did manage to keep up but sorry that I have not anywhere like used up my scraps.

This is my pile of knitted stripes:

      • Christine, this photo and the one you posted in Photos have just knocked my socks off!!!!!!

I had no idea that you were quietly creating a whole mountain of gorgeous squares, so I didn't take that into account when I announced the results

I count 73 squares and I'm not sure I counted them all.  You have squeaked in just past the deadline, and we feel that perhaps you did not see the ending time for the contest.

You have made an heroic effort to produce all these squares this month, and so after talking with Linda M. we have decided to award a second Second Prize courtesy of Linda.

Two second prizes are better than one, and you certainly deserve it!!!  Thank you for your huge participation.

Please go to the KasShop and decide how you would like the $10 spent, post a note here in the discussion, and Linda will order it.

        • It's very kind of Linda to make this gesture but I didn't think I was competing and I'm entirely happy for Wendy to win - KAS is the real winner in any case. For me it was good to be motivated into making an inroad into an ever increasing heap of oddments (when I am given yarn it is nearly always bits and pieces or 'difficult' yarns and I don't always fancy using them.) I did make a few crochet ones too but my hands and wrists are still swollen and possibly because I am less used to it crochet seems to be more painful than knitting. I have made no garments this year and not as many squares as normal so it was good to be able to challenge myself and by keeping them simple make a reasonable amount.

          • My husband's reaction to this was, "Why can you never be gracious?" so I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I just wanted to reassure you that I was happy for Wendy to be a well-deserved winner.

            • Not the impression we had Christine !  Your reply showed that your focus was on making squares to keep the children warm.
