Opening Days in the

Knit A Square Barn 2021

Opening day at the KAS Barn is all about opening parcels and sorting the squares.  Bundling the squares to be sewn into blankets and then preparing blankets for distributions.

We hope that 2021 will be a year of great success for KAS and all the children of South Africa that receive KAS blankets.

So sorry Mili I edited my post. I also wondered as Andreja's team claim their blankets immediately. Now I can look forward to an IKEA bag coming our way.

Thanks Estelle.  It's my neighbour, Mira, that's the speed knitter.

I've been off the forum for a while as my mother-in-law died and I've been helping my husband sort out all her things. She would have been 99 yesterday, and had lived for the last 47 years in the same apartment. She was a hoarder. She always used to say "Don't throw that away. It could come i useful."

What an incredible return......All those fantastic blankets. They really are works of art.

Dear Valerie, I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's-in-law passing.  I know that you would typically  spend your summers with her.  What a milestone and life achievement!

Thank you Mili. We haven't spent the last couple of summers in her summer house as her health had deteriorated, and a year and a half ago she moved into a medically assisted home.

A newsy update from Estelle from August 17.  Photos from Ronda, too.

Opening day at the KASbarn August 17 2021.
We had a fair amount of post today but didn’t get near to finishing the big blue bags. Each one contains about 400 squares which have to be sized and bundled.
Wandi and Themba left early to collect blankets and deliver squares to Protea South for the Gogos.
It was a much quieter day at the barn with only Stan bringing his wife’s four blankets and taking another four for her to join.
Sue with the blanket she stitched together so beautifully using Elaine Joubert’s fabulous squares.
Liz brought her grandchildren Emily and Jack who were a great help adding Liz’s blankets to the pile, sorting squares and opening post on that cold concrete floor. Don’t you love Marion Davies soccer ball blanket joined by Liz?
Viv opened post from Clear Lake Methodist Church and was delighted with the L O V E squares. ❤️
Athelé was also thrilled with her parcel from Clear Lake - beautiful squares packed into bundles of 35, some extras ever so neatly packed on her table and some fabulous soft toys. Thank you Kathleen Bergman for your prolific crocheters.
Ronda and I checked the blankets that were returned from St John’s College. We’re hoping to get the photographs from their Matric Farewell Dance.
Looks like you only need another 30 for that bundle Ronda.
Ath and I spent some time packing for our distribution next week. Looking forward to meeting you and the children Lister.
Thanks to all the contributors and the volunteers who pitch up each week, working towards bringing warmth and love to the children.

Thank you, thank you for these pictures - I think the more you post the more I want to send!     You're an impressive sorting emporium!!

Wow, what a lot of squares, toys and hats!! Do you ever feel overwhelmed by it all??

Yes Sadie we do especially when our tables are overflowing with squares but as soon as they are clear we can’t wait to open more post.

You guys are amazing!!

I love these reports from the barn! - everyone working flat out to get the post opened, seeing the packed tables, all the toys, hats, squares and blankets arriving- wonderful! Thanks to Liz, I loved seeing my football square in your gorgeous blanket.

That football square is really fun, Marion.

"CreateCare Global has set itself two tasks. The first is physical: to bring hope, support and comfort to children for whom poverty and loss are everyday tormentors. The second, and in our view equally important, is to spread the message to the world."
