I am trying to set up a group from my circle of friends and church group....the one constant

query is about postage how much and how do they now where there monies and patches will go.

I'm frustrated that people will not go on a little trust and faith in the goodness of the KAS and what I have seen. Even when I point out the website and suggest they go on here and research its mett with resistance.

Any tips.????

Also is there another group out there in UK land who would be willing to pool resources....had no idea how difficult this would be.

I may just do the patches myself and post myself (pouty face)

  • Hi Dawn, I find the resources page really helpful.  There are pages with rulers, etc.  The link I use is:  http://www.knit-a-square.com/knit-a-square-resources.html . A few days ago,  I printed one flyer out to carry with me in my knitting bag for the measuring ruler on the side and a lady saw it and asked about it and I gave it to her right there.

I think that it is important to be able to have the information ready when people are asking questions.  I carry printed flyers with the childrens' photos with my knitting bag all the time.  Yes, I also have found that some people don't want to bother to look up the website (but, maybe they wouldn't do anything anyway if this is too much effort). I also printed some rulers and flyers up in colour and asked permission to leave some at the public library.  I knit in waiting rooms, in the Doctors office, in the hospital, at coffee shops, etc.  and people ask what I'm making.  I give them a flyer as I explain it.  Often they will say, I don't knit but my Mom, etc. does and take the flyer.   I celebrated loudly in the computer room and told everyone when a zebra toy I made showed up in a photo!  They were asking about KAS because of that photo.  Who knows where these seed of information will grow find root and grow.

Fundraising can be difficult for postage.  I pick up pop cans! and decide, "Do I really need that chocolate bar? (I looove chocolate) and then put the money in an envelope in my purse when I did not buy it.  It adds up in little bits during the month to send the parcels (and helps with my diet!).  With winter coming on, I am considering making some hats and try to sell them at the community centre as well as have flyers on the table to let people know what KAS is all about.  The only problem is, they want $25 for the table! - I'll have to see if they will allow a free table for charity.  If not, PLAN B (I'll figure it out !)  Keep smiling!

  • Hi Dawn.

Here is a link to a flyer that may help you.

The only thing is that the info relating to the size of needles and number of stitches is possibly a little limited in its stated range. Some of us use 4.5mm/5mm needles with more stitches if we are using 8ply (I think it is also known as DK in other countries) yarn.

Here is a fundraising idea from one of our members in Australia.

Anne Powell from Canada also raises funds for postage through her church and Pam Johnson and Elaine Jones from the UK also raise funds in various ways and send lots of squares from many contributors. Perhaps you could also post this question in the UK group and see if someone is able to offer some advice/assistance.  :))

ps I can't imagine you with a 'pouty face'...your profile pic looks like you are always happy and smiling.  :))

  • Who do you use to post the squares to SA

    • Dawn how about printing offf some of the pictures of the distiributions and showing people if the won't go to the website.

My cheapest option from UK is a supermarket bag for life (only 10p!). I stuff in at lest 35 squares, one top, a few slip ins, toys and that is £10 sent Surface Mail Without the slip ins and toys you might be able to send at least nearly double that in squares.

    • Just Royal Mail, I just take my parcel to the post office
  • Hi Dawn, if you have a look under helpful hints postage it gives the Uk rates for postage , I normally send 70 squares and it is about £15. about once a month under KAS the square list is posted so you can see they have arrived in SA. There is also KAS Snippets that show details as to where the blankets have been distributed. I have seen my square actually sewn into a blanket under blanket room collection. I am now on the hunt of hoping that I will spot one of my blankets around a child. If you can't get them to look on the website try printing off a KAS Snippet so they can read it. good luck x
