Hi everyone! Seasons greetings and wishing everyone a blessed holiday season, however you celebrate. Our family is like millions of others struggling financially, but we are so blessed to have each other and our health. I'm priviledged to have started a knitting club at our son's school, where Debbie B and I are helping to teach 13 children how to knit and crochet, and they are on winter vacation now, and hopefully fiding some quiet time to sit & knit some squares when they find themselves bored. :-) I'm working this week, which is a challenge with our three children home on school vacation, but am looking forward to vacation time the week of December 28th. I'm switching between finishing up Christmas gifts and knitting the five red squares I've pledged for this month. Hope everyone has a wonderful day, and finds some time for themselves during what can be a very crazy and hectic time of the year.

  • Hard to believe we are at 18,669 - it's amazing what all of us can do together! Some may be a bit discouraged that we haven't yet hit Sandy's goal of 55,900 but every single square helps, so please keep them coming! :-)

I have an issue with my shoulder that causes pain after I've been crocheting too much, so I have a knitted square started that just doesn't go as fast as a crocheted solid granny (grumble!), but I also took a short break to finish a sock I had started months ago, and I'm so thrilled that I was able to turn the heel correctly and finish it this weekend. It's my very first sock, ever. So yesterday I cast on the second sock, as I'm using dpns and doing one at a time, and of course our 4 yr old daughter wanted to know when SHE was getting a pair of homemade socks?! So picture me with just one bright and colorful sock on as I start to swatch for her purple pair! :-)

I'll get back to the crochet squares tomorrow, hopefully. I've been to physical therapy for the pain I get under my collar bone, and the therapist said that I'm lucky to be very flexible, but I am too flexible in my shoulder joints, so I am supposed to be doing exercises to strenghten the shoulder muscles and keep everything in place where it's all supposed to be. The crocheting movements irritate this, but continental knitting doesn't bother me as much.

Worked on the knitted square in the movie theatre during Nanny McPhee Returns on Saturday, and then during Eat Pray Love on Sunday. Should be done with number 185 shortly!

    Have a lovely day!
  • So thrilled we've broken 14,000 so quickly - posting all over the need for squares! Happy Friday!
  • Hello all, I'm so ashamed that I've been neglecting my personal blog here! I will try to do better. :-)

I'm so excited to be keeper of the summer challenge tally - 13,826 made, only 174 needed to break 14,000. I've got some memorial squares to do, and I'm putting my tunisian hook to work right now. We can do this together!!!

I know 55,900 can be a daunting figure, and I keep telling myself that there is such a great need, and every little square we send will make a difference to the child whose blanket it helps to make. I'm a firm believer that God will make a way where there is no way -- so I keep trusting Him to help us spread the word and the squares will keep pouring in from around the world!

I have a few vacation days I am taking next week, and you can guess what I'll be doing while at home with our kiddos -- making squares, squares, and more squares!

Hugs to everyone - happy Thursday!
    • Hello Rona,
14,000 is a great figure and although 55,900 sounds a long way off many squares are being sent that we know nothing about. As you say people all over the world are making squares and they are not all members of the forum. I too am sure that we will be enabled and I think the last few days in August could be very exciting - like the last few minutes of an eBay auction.
      Enjoy your holiday.
      Christine
(Keep meaning to have a go at Tunisian crochet but squares first)
  • Hi everyone! I just came across the Ravelympics group over on ravelry.com, where fingers will be flying during the winter olympics starting in 30 days – anyone want to get a Team KAS together, so we can join hands (and hooks and needles) around the world making squares while watching the olympics? :-) I've posted this to the KAS group on ravelry, as well.

Mini KAS Square Ornament - Free Pattern!
Posted by Rona Malewit on December 17, 2009 at 4:00am
Hi everyone! I've made a Mini KAS Square ornament pattern that you might enjoy -- it's at my blog at http://rondaletts.blogspot.com/

I'm making them for the kiddos in our Square Circle club at my son's school, as a thank you for making squares for KAS. I'm making them red, to keep in line with the world HIV/AIDS awareness month. They can hang them on their Christmas trees, or anywhere else, to remember our KAS orphans.

I'll also post it in the pattern section

    Square Circle club today, yay!

Our son is home sick from school today and we have our square circle club this afternoon. He's upset that he can't come with me, the sweetie! We've been working on crochet for our past two meetings, and I'd like to introduce some knitting today. I've wound some small balls of yarn and will start a few rows on each set of knitting needles for them, to bypass the casting on fun -- we'll get to that later. Hoping we have some squares being produced soon! And I'll check with the teacher on the photo releases, so I can share pictures. Wish us luck! :-)
  • Rona - just moving this post to your personal blog from the general blog

Ravelry featured a photo of some ami I made

I know this isn't knit-a-square specific, but I'm excited that Ravelry featured a photo of some amigurumi I made, a bunny wedding cake topper that I did for a friend's wedding this summer. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/amigurumi-bunny-wedding-cak...

Mine's at the top, by rondaletts. Had to share :-)
  • Hey Rona - I am so glad you started your blog - it was getting lonely in this category!! I hope many others will soon join us. Merry Christmas
    • Anne, I'm sure they will, after the Christmas craziness is over, lol!

      Take care!
      Rona
