Knit a Square moved into what we loving call The Barn in 2015.  It is located in Randburg, not far from our post office.  This is a very large space that allows us to sort all the post, make blanket packs, stack blankets, and most important create our wonderful KAS cakes.  Our volunteers show up on Tuesday morning around 9:00am and work their magic until about 3:00pm.  Themba has already collected the post, and often times will make a distribution on Tuesdays.

Please know that the Barn is a success due to all our contributors, financial donors and volunteers.  Without your ongoing support we would find it difficult to carry on.

Thank you all for everything.

Check in to this discussion frequently to see the latest news and photos from The Barn.  Many thanks to our marvelous reporter, Estelle for bringing the fun of The Barn to us.

I am so glad that local squares are getting through!

We were so grateful to get the local squares Mary. It’s the first time since I have been at KAS that we didn’t have bundles for the Gogos.

More fun news from Estelle in The Barn on April 5.

Opening day at the KASbarn April 5 2022.
Once again we arrived at the barn to find no new post. I’ve copied a Press Release issued by the SAPO…let’s hope we can believe them and the situation starts improving soon.
Holding thumbs for a mountain of post next week. (please do not send items until we are assured that parcels are coming through from the past 4 weeks)
Wandi and Themba were off to Soweto to do a distribution. Many hands were needed to get the 200 blankets into the KAS van…jolly good packing there Themba.
Just a few pics from Wandi of their distribution. Well done you two, did you manage to do all the blankets?  More photos in the Distribution discussion.
Liz, Norma and Audrey showed us their latest creations.
Fabulous blanket Norma made from some of the squares Michelle Babcock and her boys brought to us last week.
Audrey did a wonderful job joining your squares Heather. Unfortunately the second part of this parcel never arrived.
Lesley King you’ll be delighted to see that your magnificent blanket has arrived safely. All I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW!!!
Welcome back from your lovely trip Ronda. Thanks for the pics of the barn, it certainly looks organized and quiet however we did manage to bundle a few blanket packs and keep busy.
We’re saving our energy for next weeks demolishment of the ever rising cake.
Norma, Lindi and Viv

So pleased to see that my blanket has arrived!!

I recognize some of the squares in the pink blanket held by Liz (?) as mine.

It's always fun to see what is going on in the barn. Thank you for all your hard work making our squares into blankets and distributing them.

On April 12 there was very little post, but our volunteers were very busy.

Please hold off on sending anything to The Barn until we get the all clear from our volunteers on site.

Here is the news from Estelle...

Opening Day at the KASbarn April 12 2022.
Today was the day to slice the cake comprising 225 blankets. This was a team effort involving photographing, folding, labelling, and packing the blankets onto the shelves.
Sheldon, Ronda, Liz, Lindi and Viviene
Carmen and Jill who have supported KAS for many years brought 16 lovely blankets, a KAS snuggle bug and hand warmers.  Our collection of Christmas blankets and toys so impressed Carmen that she requested photographs to share with friends.
The Christmas blankets are starting to pour in again for our Christmas in July distribution. Many thanks to Sheldon’s mum Wendy who knitted a LARGE square this week so Audrey could complete her Christmas Blanket ….talk about a family affair!
More Christmas...
Tea time is always enjoyed by all in the barn.
Liz and Audrey
We received two blanket packs, squares made by Joko, with the dearest little toys.
Once again our shelves are beautifully packed by Viv and Sheldon.
Lindi sewing on KAS labels.
Lesley King's incredible creation!!

Thanks to each and every one of you who help in the Barn, your work is greatly appreciated! You get to see all that we make and send for the children, and then some of you distribute it…. isn’t it wonderful team work?

Lovely to see so any happy faces working together in the bars - and such wonderful blankets and squares!!

Were there new parcels from the post office?

News from The Barn on April 26.

Opening Day at the KASbarn April 26 2020.
Happy Days are here again 🎶🎵🎶 we received about 30 parcels today...unfortunately they came as we were closing the barn BUT we have something to look forward to. Roll on Tuesday! Thank you Themba
Liz Gyldenhuis’s grandchildren Jack and Lucy did a sterling job sorting toys, beanies and the yarn cupboard to earn Community Service points.
We packed for upcoming distributions and all waited patiently for the post to arrive.
Not sure how Bella fitted into the back of Mandy’s car. We filled it with beautiful warm blankets to be distributed at the Kya Sands Informal Settlement. Hope you could see out of your rear view window Mands.
Still only 3 bags for the Gogos…hopefully this pallet will be groaning with bags next week.
Dear Lindi waiting for the post to arrive. It came at the end of the day...
Mandy and Ronda...
Estelle, our incredible reporter...

A very busy day at The Barn on May 3...from Estelle.

Opening Day at the KASbarn May 3 2022.
It was like Christmas all over again…great excitement at the sight of all the parcels. We waisted no time opening them to find exquisite blankets and squares.
Remember 30 packages arrived at the end of the day last week.
Norma displaying six blankets from Sharon B.
Just amazing colors and items from Ada B.
Two of the six blankets Ina Schilte sent from Malaysia.
Lovely work from Patricia Underwood.
We always love receiving new yarn.
Ooo...look at all those different colors.
Two of Ronda’s friends Michelle and Ali came to help us, got stuck in straight away and bundled squares as if they had been doing it for years.
Michelle and Ali helped by Liz, Audrey and Jack sort about 330 super squares from Jan Noah from Maplewood Ohio.
A happy, fun and busy morning was had by all…thanks to all our volunteers and visitors maybe having post to open had something to do with the atmosphere.
Granny and Jack with Michelle looking on. Ronda and Ali checking the yarn.
Jack adding some Community Hours.
Our lovely Lindi.
Thanks to all of contributors for their beautiful work and generosity…unfortunately we could not photograph the contents of all the parcels.

Yay, good to see some post filtering in and what lovely blankets it contained! Hope more will be arriving soon.

A proper Opening Day at last! Very pleased to see that one of my outstanding parcels has arrived safely.
