My trip to Edinburgh in May

Hello,

I hope nobody minds that I am posting a non-KAS related question in this group :)

I will be in Scotland in May (Edinburgh and the Western Isles) and I need some advise with regards to weather and clothing please. I will obviously need a water proof jacket and hiking boots, but how cold does it really get in May? Do I take a really thick winter jacket or rather some type of rain coat and maybe a fleece jacket underneath?

And are there any nice wool shops in Edinburgh?

Thanks,

Gitta

  • Hi--I just returned from a trip to Europe and the UK, including Edinburgh--we were there during the month of April but I have been there before in May. Many mornings are a bit overcast with intermittent light showers but generally sunny in the afternoon. A warm coat and sweater are needed most times, and an umbrella sometimes, although the rain is more like drizzle.

Edinburgh has a new yarn shop--McAree Brothers--at 19 Howe Street, just a 5-10 min walk from Edinburgh's Princes Street. I didn't have time to check it out but you can quickly "google" yarn shops in Edinburgh to see where they all are.
    • Loree, Gitta is in Edinburgh as we write! Hope she is enjoying this wonderful city.  Unfortunately, the winter is refusing to let go of its grip in the UK and it is still quite cold!  Hope you had better weather during your European tour!

      • It was much the same in Holland and Belgium but I didn't mind--just had to dress warmly.  And the best weather was on the Isle of Mull in Tobermory--the sunniest, warmest day we had during our 3 weeks of traveling!

  • Essentially Gitta, the advice from Clare and the others on the UK Group page will be like the British weather - variable!

As street market traders we have experience rain, snow, fog, wind and sunshine all in one day............

All I can add is that you may not need gloves in May!

    • Thanks Pam :) I will pack a hat and fingerless gloves just to be safe.

  • Hi there,,,,am not from Scotland but often go on hols there, I'm off to Fort William in May (end of) and wont be taking any big winter coats. Will take waterproof and some sturdy shoes plus  a couple of fleece jumpers but am hoping to get some sun and warm weather whilst there! Hope thats some help!

    Have fun

    Clare

    • Thanks Clare :)
