MINI CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE!

So, who would like to join me in a mini, ONE SQUARE, challenge over the Christmas and New Year period? (Go on, you know you can squeeze one square in between the cooking, wrapping, opening, Christmas festivities, family visits, television repeats......!)

The idea is as follows.....

The challenge runs from today and is open until the 2nd of January. There isn't a deadline for finished squares, although it would be lovely aim for the end of January.

I'm the first participant. The next person to join me (second participant) will nominate a 'theme' for me to create one square by posting their theme in the discussion thread below. Once I've made my square, I'll also post a picture of it in the discussion thread.

The next person to join (third participant), will nominate a theme for the second participant, who makes a square with that theme, posting a picture of their finished square and so on.

Be as imaginative and creative as you like with your themes, for example colours, animals, something beginning with a certain letter, nationalities, education, underwater, space, Christmas, fairytale and so on. Have a look at past or future challenges for inspiration.

I will officially 'close' the mini-challenge on the 2nd of January by posting a theme for the last person to join and then hopefully we'll have pictures of all finished squares by the middle to end of January.

Have a lovely Christmas, New Year and what's my 'theme'.....?

  • 2930286116?profile=originalHere is my final square for the Mini-Challenge.   Karen Bennett gave me quite a challenge when she asked me to make a square representing a Superhero, such as the wonderful, dedicated, superheroes at KAS.

My ideas for a Superhero square went through many iterations;  unfortunately my ideas were bigger than my skill.

Finally, I managed to complete this square that honors the Superheroes of KAS -- each and every volunteer, moderator, stitcher, and yarn buyer.

Thank You Karen for a really fun, creative, stimulating, and thought-provoking challenge.   And we made enough squares in this one little challenge to make one child warm with a KAS blanket!  YIPPEE!

    • Sharon, thank you so much for rising to the Superhero challenge! This is a lovely square and I really hope we spot it in one of the finished blankets :) - I'll be keeping an eye out for all of these gorgeous challenge squares. - And I did love Christine C's comment about your square - I'm now wondering if I can make a teddy bear or two, wearing "Super KAS pants" and capes? :) xx

      • Oh, Karen, that would make such a wonderful toy!   I'd much rather the teddy bear wear the blue tights and red cape!

Thanks again Karen for a great little Christmas treat with this mini-challenge.

    • Sharon this square is so great.  You captured the true essence of the KAS community.

    • WOW!  Sharon, this is fantabulous!!!  Your skill is much greater than you will admit!!!!  I love this ... your colours are so bright and cheerful.

I would love to know how you did this.  Is it done with felt?  And if so, did you write on the felt ... and with what?

And every volunteer, moderator, stitcher, and yarn buyer thanks you, I'm sure, for this gorgeous badge of honour :)))

Oh ... and by the way ... I LOVE the colour of your background square ... xo

      • Thank you so much Gloria for your kind words!

Yes, the Superman logo is made of felt; two layers, red with cutouts, and solid yellow behind.   I originally used a plain running stitch to attach it to the knitted square, but wasn't really happy with the way that looked, so added a blanket stitch to the edges.   I did not remove the original running stitch, because I was afraid it would just tear.

The words were written on graph paper (an attempt to keep them even and straight, not entirely successful, as you can see), and surrounded with the bubbles, then the shape cut out in yellow felt.  I lightly wrote the letters onto the felt with a fine tip Sharpie pen, then stitched over the letters with Carpet thread, attaching them to the background.

I was lucky that I had the royal blue yarn in my stash.  Recently there was a big sale at one of the local stores, so I stocked up on all the basic colors, knowing that there were many fun KAS themes ahead.

        • Sharon I can't think of a better square to give a child confidence in themself.  Super, if you'll pardon the pun?

  • And CONGRATULATIONS mini-challenge ladies :) - With the addition of Linda's countryside squares, we've made a blanket between us!

If you haven't already, please have a look at our picture album: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/photo/albums/mini-christmas-challeng... There's also a beautiful owl square I couldn't put into the album, but it's within the discussion. x
