Make it in May Challenge
Let's put Make it in May into context!
Most of the blankets we now distribute include at least one, two or more squares, in between the ‘plain jane' (garter or plain crochet) squares that are creative, embroidered, striped, patterned, appliqued, initialed, sequined, beaded, buttoned, ribboned, multi-yarned, multi-coloured or just exquisitely made. It is incredible how these squares lift the whole blanket into a work of great beauty. Knit-a-square works on lots of levels, but importantly it is democratic because no one blanket is more beautiful than another. All our made by squares which are warm, cosy and have just that little bit of beauty and creativity to make the blanket unique and special to its owner. These squares are the best way to personalise the blankets for our
children.
Last year the challenge was to challenge yourself to try something new - a new stitch, learn to crochet if you knit and knit if you crochet, try dyeing your own yarn or search out new yarns (we are told you can buy from people’s stashs on Ravelry – bound to be some great yarns available)
You can go to Zina’s blog (http://anotherlongyarn.zinalee.net/?p=1426) and try some of the designer squares, especially designed for knit-a-square by Diana Troldahl, Lucy Neatby and Kristeen Griffen-Grimes. Also there are lots of ideas and patterns in both ravelry and in the forum. Don’t forget to share your patterns,
ideas for decorations and photographs with the rest of us and to let us know what you are challenging yourself to do this month.

Well, I've frogged my first attempt after the first two sections already, as it was way too large, so cast on again this afternoon with size 7 needles instead of 9. Looks more to size! :-) So far, so good. The instructions are pretty simple, and I'm cross-checking step by step pictures at a different website, knittyotter.typepad.com and that's helping too.

The one thought is, if what you're making is too big, it could be turned into a slipover front if the yarn is soft, or a Go-Over front square...just a thought. :) I mention this because one night I was paying more attention to the tv and now I've got one square that's MUCH too big so I'm going to have to do something similar with it, lol. Oh my...

Oh Jeanne you make me laugh so much, you are a joy to know.... Elizabeth don't like the sound of you getting stressed take some time out for yourself, don't forget all the other KASers who are franticly knitting but don't comment on forums very often so they will hold up the end for you. Your contributions are so huge and constant take a little respite time, no stressing now. Sending you......nice calm, thoughts.

There will be some great original [make it in May] slip overs heading to SA if you are left to your own devices!! I have bought some really soft [sale ] yarn with a slipover in mind for a bit further on in the year.
I am currently very occupied on a wool blanket requested by one of my sons. Well I thought I had better step out of KAS and attend to my family since I was asked. I took a risk . One of my other son's now noticing that I don't knit solely in pink and purple has thought he "could do with one of those too in man colours like this one". And Well -I can't leave my third son out can I!! Knitting for KAS will be a break between blankets. I'm sewing up the first one tonight.
I have a parcel to send to KAS in June I'll have to count up the squares but there are about 80. However, apart from two squares I have knitted, the month of May will pass me by for now. -

Seems like knitting for your boys is your Make it May challenge :) It's nice that they want something you've made; especially now that they see you can do 'manly colours'. That made me giggle a little. Of course we can knit in all colours - we just have our favourites, or what is given to us or what's on sale.
I'm currently making a shawl in pink which is so NOT me but it's a wool/silk blend that someone gave me so I thought 'why not'? -

I too am smiling over your boys' noticing the more "manly" colors. I think we have to remember not to neglect our families and still make stuff for them too. As for my slipover that's about 3/4's done, the soft worsted yarn called for a 4.5o mm hook but I upped it to a 5.50 so it's nice and light and warm but no chance of being "stiff". It's working up very fast and isn't a fight to use, unlike my 100% wool yarn which is stiff and "outdoorsy". I agree with Dawne that we never know what colors will be somebody else's "cup of tea". Do take breathers when you need to dearies, others are working while you're taking time outs, it's all good. :)

Well I agree about the colours. I had made Harrison a blanket which was mainly blue as that is his favourite. But he spotted my current KAS of browns and greens lying on the carpet and fancied that too. I think at some point I will have to make him a second blanket as he is very fond of the crochet squares. nice to be appreciated by your own.

I have just finish some football teddies for the world cup, they are in yellow and green the african colours I could velco then onto square. This would be fun for the children to have a blanket and a toy together.
