Hello my name is Sue Adams and above is a snippet of my mihi, my traditional Maori introduction. I am currently studying to become a Early Years teacher and have a professional goal of increasing my Te Reo Maori, so I slip it out where ever I can!.

I lived in London and travelled Europe for 10 years and then returned home to begin my study to be a teacher.  My mother taught me how to knit, which quickly grew into a passion of mine and I am always looking for new exciting projects.

I was searching for square patterns to make a blanket as a time filler over the long university holidays when I came across knit a square.  I am very excited by this project and hope to have my first three squares in the post by the end of this week.

Thank you to the creators for making such an inspiring project.

  • Hi, Sue!

Welcome (from the Philadelphia area) and congratulations on mailing your first squares!

I was very interested to read your traditional Maori introduction.  I was watching a documentary a few weeks ago -- I think it was an international cooking show -- and some visitors wanted to draw on the knowledge of a village full of Maori people.  But first they had to work on their traditional Maori introductions!

    Very interesting!

It's great to have you with us - I know you'll have fun!

As for signing this, I guess I should follow your example and say: Ko Donna tōku ingoa. ;-)

  • Welcome, Sue, from near Philadelphia in the USA. I am a teacher and have been for 40+ years! I have a private tutoring practice now and work one-to-one teaching reading, math, organization skills, study skills. Happy to hear you will be joining our ranks soon.

One of my favorite films is Whale Rider in which the Maori language and culture is featured. The Hawaiian language seems similar or perhaps related as the Hawaiian natives came from the South Seas originally. So interesting, this world of ours. So glad you found us!

    • Hi Sue another Sue from New Zealand !! I am living in Auckland. You will enjoy knitting for this family based Charity.

Good Luck with your studies !

      • Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.  I am very proud that I sent off my first 4 squares today.  My mother has supplied me with her rather large 'odds and sods' box of wool that I will very happily convert into squares. I am enjoying trying out different patterns from the website to increase my skill base.

I am a knitter.  My mother is an excellent crocheter, she did try and teach my sister and I many moons ago, but it never stuck with me. I am also an avid Motorsport fan, so knitting has kept me busy many nights whilst I have been waiting for Grand Prix Live from Europe to start. My struggle has always been finding fun and interesting projects to make.  I make endless scarfs anf gloves for my friends int he Uk.

I am so pleased to have found knit a square, and hope to become a contributing member of the community.

        • Well done Sue,  knitting whilst watching motorsport seems a good idea - two enjoyable things at the same time!
