In the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas  by Dr. Seuss, the Grinch stole Christmas from the people of Who-ville.

In South Africa, disease and poverty stole childhood from millions of children.

Can we displace the Grinch in a child’s life?

Just for a moment?

Christmas gift making is starting early !

Ronda requested more time to prepare the blankets before the holiday season arrives.

Besides themed squares, we also need many, many Plain Janes to complete a blanket.  Please do not be deterred by the fancy square.  We would love to see how you are using Christmas colours to warm a cold child.  A square made with red, green and/or white would be quite striking.  Variegated Christmas yarns also make interesting squares

A few reminders:

  • Please securely butterfly  a 20”/50 cm tail to each square and bundle squares into lots of 5 or 10, to help the sewers in South Africa.
  • Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the month.   When your parcel arrives in the next few months, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.
  • Would you upload your photos to the photo page as well as to this challenge. (Not sure how to add a photo? Click here then scroll to “How do I add a Photo to a discussion” )
  • After uploading your photos, please go to The Drive To Fill Ronda’s KASvan and add to the squares tally.

Marvellous Mary has set up Flickr.  Great place to see all the photos together and spread the word !

Gracious Gitta has set up the Christmas Album. There are so many wonderful squares that Gitta has opened a Second Christmas Album

Trying to crochet 6 geese on an 8”/20 cm square proved to be impossible.  The geese were just too small to be appreciated.  Here is the goose to represent 6 geese a laying….she’s looking for her egg LOL

The background is a very soft pearl grey, which of course, doesn't show properly.

I have so enjoyed Linda's beautiful birds that I just had to try a square with birds.  Of course, she designs her own, while I just find a pattern and follow the chart.

Thanks for the inspiration, Linda!

Now that I am only adding one character to each square it is going a bit faster.  Here is Day 7- Seven swans a-swimming.

What an amazing challenge Linda :) I received the following squares last Saturday :)

June Challenge - donated squares in red and green

Here is jumper 17 made by my Mother (Sylvia). This one is a bright cheery red that I thought fit with the Christmas theme for June, hence my posting the photo here.

Measures 28 Inches so should fit a child of about 7/8 years.

Has 3 buttons down the front on a collar, securely attached (no button my mother sews on ever comes off), so should be easy on and off for the recipient.

I think this one would be good for either a boy or a girl.

Batch of Christmas Plain Jane's today.  As usual the colour of the green squares looks much paler than it really is, they really are a pretty Christmassy green.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.......

The buttons are very special to me, I took them out of my Mum's "Button Box". The box is at least 70 years old and I even found buttons in there dating back to my childhood! I recognised them from dresses and blouses I had :)). I am sure she should have fully agreed to please the vulnarable children by using her buttons, serving as Christmas Tree Lighting and as a symbol of light.

A rescued square for Christmas!

"Christmas Present" -  I decided to try something different.  I made a potholder on a loom and then took it off by crochet.  Then added rows to get it to the correct 8 inch size and added a sparkly red bow.

Square for Day 8: The 8 maids were having tea but Daisy was very obliging and posted for the square :-)
