In the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas  by Dr. Seuss, the Grinch stole Christmas from the people of Who-ville.

In South Africa, disease and poverty stole childhood from millions of children.

Can we displace the Grinch in a child’s life?

Just for a moment?

Christmas gift making is starting early !

Ronda requested more time to prepare the blankets before the holiday season arrives.

Besides themed squares, we also need many, many Plain Janes to complete a blanket.  Please do not be deterred by the fancy square.  We would love to see how you are using Christmas colours to warm a cold child.  A square made with red, green and/or white would be quite striking.  Variegated Christmas yarns also make interesting squares

A few reminders:

  • Please securely butterfly  a 20”/50 cm tail to each square and bundle squares into lots of 5 or 10, to help the sewers in South Africa.
  • Your parcel does not need to arrive in South Africa before the end of the month.   When your parcel arrives in the next few months, know it will be appreciated and that you are keeping children warm.
  • Would you upload your photos to the photo page as well as to this challenge. (Not sure how to add a photo? Click here then scroll to “How do I add a Photo to a discussion” )
  • After uploading your photos, please go to The Drive To Fill Ronda’s KASvan and add to the squares tally.

Marvellous Mary has set up Flickr.  Great place to see all the photos together and spread the word !

Gracious Gitta has set up the Christmas Album. There are so many wonderful squares that Gitta has opened a Second Christmas Album

A Christmas pattern with some soft fluffy yarn trim ...

Two more squares.  A trip to Edinburgh resulted in more buying of wool including a true Christmas green and at Poundland a sparkly midnight blue to create hopefully a star effect.  The variegated  yellow has come out here a bit too pale in parts, but it makes a nice contrast with the traditional Christmas colours. . . .

Here is my second square for the June Christmas challenge.  I knitted the Christmas tree picture separately from the square and then sewed it on.  The yellow lines across it are meant to be tinsel LOL!

The green of the tree is much darker and richer than it looks in the photo, it is a pretty good 'Christmassy' green.

I actually had this one finished about a week ago, but the weather here has been awful (cloudy and raining almost every day as it is winter here in Aus), so I only got a chance to do a photo today.

A sparkly star made from glitter yarn.  The background is actually a bright rich red, not the pale colour it appears here. This challenge is such fun to do - it will feel like I've had two Christmases this year, one now and one again in December.

This yarn, as I have tried to show in the centre zoom, has a sparkly red/silver thread throughout and also lots of timey red/silver sequins.

I love all the granny squares I see and thought I would have a go. I used the pattern from the KAS pattern book but the first attempt came out so thin and holey that I abandoned it. I thought that I would then try making a ch1 space rather a ch2 (as the pattern directs); this one came out ok (top left) but still felt rather thin and the holes still looked 'draughty'. So I tried using 2 strands of double-knit yarn instead of one but still with the same 5mm hook and a ch1 space, and was happier with the resulting 3 squares. The holes do still seem quite big, though - not sure what I am doing wrong here.

Adding another Christmas tree to our forest (buttons are attached firmly with button thread)

"Santa's Arrival".  This was fun to make... Santa's legs are stuffed so it looks 3D in person.

I call this one "Starry Night".

Another square in Christmas colors.  I made up the design, but I'm learning it that can look quite different than on my excel spreadsheet.   But it's still nice.

I have really loved all the squares using sparkling yarn, but (alas) I don't seem to have any ... so my trees aren't the happy, sparkly ones that have been such a delight, but they are made with wool so should be warm.

(I can't help thinking about Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening when I look at this square, so here's a link to the poem.  http://www.ketzle.com/frost/snowyeve.htm)
