A community based project where children are encouraged to collect, sort and deliver “recyclable junk” to a central point and exchange it for tokens.
They can then use the tokens to “shop” in an associated shop for toiletries, food, clothing, school supplies and books.
The materials collected are sold to a local recycler. Money earned this way, pays for about 30 percent of stock in the shop. Local businesses and individuals are invited to contribute by way of donations for the shop stock.
The benefits from this project are numerous; it cleans up our environment, empowers the kids to get what they need by using what is available, teaches the children to look at rubbish in a different way, the value of recycling, shopping and counting skills and deliver much needed support in a value for value concept rather than old fashioned hand-outs.
The sessions take place on a Monday, except during school holidays.

Looks like one little girl is ready to take up knitting!
I hope she has someone who can teach her to knit.....wouldn't that be great??!!!
I also love the little one in the bottom pic, manfully carrying a garbage bag almost as big as himself.
October 17 was a busy day at JBay, here is their update.

Update from October 10, 2016
Pam's back! 269 kids traded nearly 3,4 tons of trash for treasure today. Thank you to Infood for yummy soup, Pappilon for fresh carrots, Mona and Zanele from EPWP, Louise, Leah and Teresa from All Africa, the young man from Victory Gap Year, Liesl, Chezanne, Andre, Ryan, Arlene and colleague from Uplift Connect and all our regulars.

The children picked out a teddy and hand warmers at JBay Recycling yesterday.
I just love this project. It brings together some essential actions.....helping both children in need and the environment.
This is obviously a really successful project and it's great that KAS can help by providing warm things like these handwamers and teddy
