Dawne, I too would think the little "bunches" between the rows are the anemones. It's very pretty and the yarn sounds wonderfully warm. That's a lovely pink color and the green is very peaceful. I agree, I think your link, Jan, puts us onto the pattern.  It's certainly very close if not identical to Dawne's.  Personally I like the one color version of it better but perhaps it's just the colors they use in the linked pattern?  I suppose white "flowers" on another color would really stand out, or yellow on blue but that does sound finicky to do.  Either way, lovely pattern. :)

I know you're a crochet whiz but this is the knitting pattern exactly Jeanne.  I'm going to recommend it on FB, Ravelry and perhaps even on AFO.  A great 'new pattern' for this month's challenge for sure.  Anyone who knits should try it.

Jan,Thanks for this link.   I have been thinking about creating a giraffe pattern.....and there was one already done in Carla's blanket !   I shall be making a few giraffes (and elephants) this month.

Knit-a-Square is new to me but not charity knitting. I found the simple slipover pattern in a discussion board here and I've made 6 over my time off work for the holidays -- including 1 on January 2nd, so it counts for the new year!  I used the slipover pattern but knitted it in the round (because I like circular knitting) and knitted the strap striaght up from the body doing a 3 needle bind-off to attach the strap to the other side. I took some pictures and will post soon. Right now, I'm using up stash which is almost all acrylic but I'm planning to start in on the wool pile soon.

 

I also like to knit squares for blankets -- making squares with leftover yarn and then putting all different colors together. I use worsted weight yarn and the same needles, knitting diagonal squares starting with 2 stitches, working up to 40 and then back down again (famous dishcloth pattern). They end up basically the same size. I throw the knitted squares in a bag and when I get a big pile, I use mattress stitch to seam them up into blankets.

 

I'm excited to find some like-minded people to share charity knitting with. I'm organizing a group of women at work to get together as a service project on MLK Jr. Day in February and KIP (knit in public) and I'm suggesting to them that we do blankets or vests to ship to Africa.

Welcome to KAS Ginger!  Way to go on knitting up 6 slipovers, that's fabulous.  The little ones so need the body warmth.   Knitting and crocheting a tube is indeed a simple way to go about it.  I've done that myself in crochet as I am notorious for not keeping larger panels straight sided...they tend to narrow or expand on me...going circular stops that one...well usually...one KAS Cuddle did seem to go narrower on me.  Sigh...I shall persevere. :)

 

Diagonal knit squares are so pretty, several members here enjoy doing them.  The blanket size most commonly used here is 7x5 squares.  So you can join them yourself (but risk customs duty if they open the package, generally they don't-just putting "knitting for charity" on the package instead of "knitted squares for charity", though technically the blanket is made of knitted squares) or send them in bundles or packages of that amount...they will be sewn together in South Africa by many interested groups, including churches and a prison.  I admit I just send whatever I've done, along with whatever hats or sweaters I've also come up with.

 

Do let us know how it goes with your group to work on MLK Day etc.  It sound most exciting!

Welcome Ginger! What a lovely post.  It made me smile to read it.  I know Doctor King would think knitting for others is a wonderful act of service.

 

Last summer during some research for a post I wrote about Mandela Day I came across a list of 67 ways to celebrate Mandela's 67 years of service on the Mandela Foundation Page.  I believe #8 on the list was 'knit a blanket square for someone in need'.  It was quite high up on the list.

 

KIP day is summer right?  That would make for a great KAS awareness event.  Don't be shy - put out a small box and ask passerby and participants to drop in spare change toward postage.  Last May for KASOTG Day [Knit a Square on the Go Day] we raised $25 toward postage just by having a jar and an informative poster board on display.

I know what you mean about the childrens smiling faces Jeanne they are an inspiration to keep our fingers busy. I am glad about the "Colours of Hope" theme. I have been knitting up a  "bag of bits" that I told myself I had to use up before I start on new batches of wool I have bought. It is amazing when you start how well colours go together they make very cheerful garments.
