January Challenge-Colors of Hope and New Pattern, New Year!
As many of you have no doubt already noticed, a discussion has sprung up regarding an appropriate January Challenge. At this time of year it was thought that Colors of Hope, as in stashbusting your oddments of yarn, would not only produce a square, hat or sweater that would give Hope to a child but also hope to us--that we'd clear out our yarn stashes a little bit! :D
Along with that, another Moderator (Dawne) suggested "New Pattern, New Year" for any of you wanting something interesting to start the New Year off with. I suggest any new patterns we are trying be listed here so others can try too, knitting or crocheting. Sounds good? And if anyone wants to try weaving that also produces warm squares. A small plastic table loom, cheaply bought in a child's craft section produces potholders and squares which when woven in yarn will be quite warm and welcome. So long as they are about 8 inches it's all for the good of the children. :)
I'm still plowing through my bright coral pink yarn, which is certainly a color of Hope, but I am doing a hat right now with vertical stripes of leftover yarn bits between the pink, so it will definitely be eye-catching when it's done, but also warm...remember Africa's winter will soon be upon them. As many of us warm up, they cool down so now is not too early to start making something thick and lovely for the dear children. I keep looking at the smiling child in the purple and lavender hat atop this page, that kind of smile can keep me crocheting through a lot of snowy nights. :)

not a new pattern...but scraps could all be sewn together into a 8 inch by 64 inch strip to be mailed....or a strip of 8 ..8 inch blocks could be sewen into a strip...the strips can be put together to make a colorful top. I would also be interested in doing some special sewing for children in a mission setting...a one to one need for a child size wise for a blanket top..toy...pullover.mittens....etc...(adopt a child one x a month or such for needs???) Just thoughts....Have Happy New Year

Hi Paulette,
I think it's a great idea to have some "one on one" projects going...I will suggest this further on into January, see if there is a specific creche need where you might do "one on one". It's quite possible, so stay tuned to this space. :)

A soft top made of strips where one strip each side is also the shoulder strap, ie. goes double length, front, back and over the shoulders is a possibility. -

I think that someone has suggested strip before but there is a problem with customs as they could be classed as scarfs.

I've just started my first project of the year. I'm making a slip-over type top out of the rest of my brightly coloured yarn left over from the blanket.
Its a bit of an experiment as I'm just developing my crochet skills. I'm making lots of 4" squares and then crocheting them together to make a tank top. Each square has a flower in the middle and uses a different combination of colours.
This year I'm planning to do a lot more crocheting than knitting as I've recently discovered how mych quicker it is! Will be looking for new patterns to try out for sure....

I love this! I've always said that determination is a better word for stubborn. I'd bet if you stay determined you'll make a wonderful tank top. It sounds very lovely.

Thanks...I'm pleased with it so far.
Here's a photo of my progress:
Its going to be 4 squares x 4 squares in total for the front panel with extra squares for the shoulders and then I'll probably make one large square for the back with 4 small squares along the bottom edge to make it the right size - If that makes sense!!!

While crochet "goes" quicker---it can also be more gappy. I think each craft has it's pluses and minuses. I love knitting, to look at and buy but I'm not brilliant at it. Your slip-over style top, providing it is soft yarn could end up as an undergarment for warmth for a sick child, or if it's stiffer yarn then as an outer garment over the thin bits of clothes they do have, either way it would keep in warmth. And bright colors are so celebratory I will look forwards to hearing how your project turns out. :) I think the squares are very very pretty indeed. Bravo!
