I'm glad to have found you!  I have only just started knitting and am now onto socks, but I still want to knit square for KasCare.  I was diagnosed with HIV some years ago.  Living in the UK has meant free access to treatment; I enjoy a healthy life.  I am saddened by the news and stories of countries that don't give free access to those affected like me.  If I can help in this small way I will try my best to continue.  I have asked friends for odd bits of yarn.  I sent my first parcel off to S.Africa today.  But I've made a mistake in not putting the squares in a plastic bag; I hope they arrive okay.

Question:  I think I read somewhere I could knit something longer than 8" as long as it is 8" wide - is this a possibility.

Many thanks, Philip

  • Hello Phillip. Brilliant to have you on board and it's so heart warming to know that you are prepared to help others in a similar situation to you but without as much support. Thank you for joining us!

    • Thanks Kalai, Sue, Elaine, and Carol, for more warm welcomes!  I have taken great encouragement from your words.  I shall keep experimenting with colours.  I knit the squares diagonally in garter stitch, alternating the colours sometimes.  The latest square was mostly green with some purple lines; I'm a great fan of tennis and Wimbledon, and those are the colours of the Championships - maybe it will inspire a future champion!?

The work I see in and around this site is truly amazing, well done everyone!  It is quite humbling to be part of a great team.  Sad that it is necessary in the first place. But lets do our bit and the world will change for the better ...

      Happy knitting everyone!

      • Beautifully said Phillip!  Wishing you a blessed week and happy knitting to you too!

        Hugs!

  • Hi Philip and welcome from a soggy Shropshire.  We're delighted to have you on board.  If you'd like to join the UK group, you would be very welcome.  Just click on "groups" on the bar above and then find "UK".

    • Welcome Philip. You know if we all made fancy colours and patterns in all of our squares the children would be crosseyed looking at them. We need the plain ones just as much. If you are treating yourself to yarn choose a bright colour if you can. However like most of us you probably get given some or are stashbusting  a lot of the time. Oh and by the way you have probably seen that socks are always needed !

  • Many thanks for the words of welcome; and for the tips.  I shall get on with some more squares then!  - and try to remember to take a pic for here....

    • Hi Philip

Welcome to our friendly forum....from Western Australia.

Wow! Only just started knitting, and already making socks. Like Christine, I have been knitting on and off for about 40 years, but have never attempted socks. There are some nice slippers in our pattern section ( the tab is at the top of the page) which I think are probably quite easy to make and many of our members have done so.

      Happy knitting!

p.s. would love to see a pic of your work.

      • Thanks everyone!  After seeing some of the work produced by all on here I realise I AM just a beginner! lol - my squares are plain garter stitch, but I do mix in bright colours, mostly by alternating every couple of rows, or just a few rows in each.  I have done a few with various stich patterns, chequers and diamonds and crosses, but that took a lot of concentration for my small brain!  And knitting plain lets me pray while I knit! Prayerful knitting - now that's a way I shall suggest when folk tell me they can't pray!  A friend told me she did her praying while ironing!

Again, thanks and am so impressed by the work in the pictures - really beautiful.

        Philip

        • Hi Philip and welcome. I just wanted to say your 'plain garter stitch' squares are extremely valuable. They are the backbone of every blanket and without those there would not be many blankets. Using bright colours is great for the children.

I have been knitting (havent quite mastered crochet yet) for many years and when I look at some of the photos I too still feel like a beginner! Saying that, I have also learnt such a lot from the wonderful helpful people on here

          Happy knitting  :)

  • Before sending your next parcel Philip, please take some photos and add them to the Photo Tab on the menu bar, we'd all love to see your work!
