Good News Stories

A few things have happened already this year that have made me smile and I thought I would start a Good News thread.  Please post here anything at all that warms the heart, reminds us of the generosity of others, good news about KAS or anything else to make us all smile as we go into 2012.

    • What a wonderful story. I work with dogs and this story made me cry. :)

  • I have copied this story here because it is such a good news story - and might get missed - there are so many nuggets on the forum but it takes a bit or surfing to find them all sometimes! ---

The South Yorkshire Times published the story and photo below.  Chris Board is now a member and KAS and I thought it would be nice to share the details and photo of the residents of Haxey.

Staff member Chris Broad told the Bells/Advertiser that six of the village home’s resident have been knitting blankets for a worthy cause called Kascare - aid for the AIDS orphans in Africa.

“We are hoping to get some sort of contact with one of these orphanages to be able to work with them more in the future,” explained Chris.

“Six residents in total took part and knitted two colourful blankets between them.”

It was hoped that they would be posted on to the charity last week.

Pictured with their knitting are Jean Davies, Ruth Scrimshaw, Charlie Dunn and Kathleen Johnson who between them knitted over 400 squares for the charity blankets.

  • Hope you won't mind me sharing a personal experience of goodness and caring.

Last week I felt able to collect our dear Mum's ashes from the Funeral Director, and it brought back all the kindness and caring we received after she died in April 2010.  One event does stand out.  The wait for the funeral was 3 weeks & 2 days - it seemed interminable. Plus, we had a dilemma, my brother's daughter Rebecca was just about to take her finals after 4 years study at University and her exams didn't finish until 2 days after the funeral.  We took the decision not to tell her as we knew she would be deeply affected. My Mother baby-sat her most days in the early years and they were very close. It was hard keeping up the pretence whenever Becca phoned or emailed. I mentioned the dilemma to a lovely customer of ours, and a couple of days later she offered to come and discreetly video the event so that Becca could feel she had said a proper goodbye.  When her exams were over we allowed her a few days of celebration with fellow students before we broke the sad news.  She agreed, much to Nick's relief, that we had taken the correct decision.  Result : she obtained a 2:1 degree in English Literature & the History of Art from Edinburgh Uni.

Jennie not only filmed the funeral, but her son edited it - apparently she had a coughing fit and the video captured shots of the chapel floor, walls and ceiling!  Mum was in a woven Water Hyacinth Leaf coffin - it looked so cosy and warm! Jennie is a specialist solicitor, very busy and has her own elderly Mum to watch over, yet, she travelled and gave us her precious time in order to bring all of some comfort and relief.  Becca now feels she is ready to watch the video.

    • That's a special story Pam - what a kind thing to do and I'm sure Becca knows how much care you took to let her do her exams but still share later in the funeral.

  • A good news article from the Stephen Lewis Foundation.  The organization mentioned works in  KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

"Community-based organizations are using music, art, performance, storytelling and other forms of creative expression as powerful catalysts for healing, transformation and action.  In this month’s issue ofVoices, we hear from dlalanathi’s Mbulelo Duma about the organization’s groundbreaking work using the arts to help children and their caregivers affected by HIV, poverty and loss"

    • I know something good that happens every day.   There are hundreds of people all over the world busy making items for the kas orphans.  That,s not just good it is wonderful.

      • Absolutely Maggie - I know that for me being part of KAS is a weapon against all the bad things that go on - and a positive action.

  • I found this site a while ago: http://www.happynews.com/index.aspx and it is full of happy, real news stories. I wish there were more sites like that one!!

  • I am enjoying reading items on this page. Personally I stopped buying newspapers years ago, not because of the bad news, and there is plenty of that and I catch up with that at the computer, but I dont want to hear all about so called 'celebrities' and who's dating which 'celebrity'. Wouldnt it be great if there was a newspaper which just carried good news? I'm sure there are lots of stories that people dont get to hear about, so lets keep this page rolling for as long as possible  :)
