Go for the Gold

When this theme was selected in October 2019, the Olympics in Japan were going to start this month.  Then COVID 19 came onto the scene and things have changed drastically.  The Olympics, to date have been moved to the summer of 2021, still in Japan and still starting in July.

In light of this change, this month we are going to focus on a few things Olympic oriented and a few things GOLD oriented.

The Olympics mean several countries from all around the world sending their best athletes competing in many different sports.

We can celebrate each country by making creating images and color combinations of their flags and the Olympic flag.

We can celebrate the sports by showing what those sports might be: running, swimming, sailing, cycling, football, volleyball, golf, tennis, equestrian events and so much more.

We can celebrate the country of Japan.

We can celebrate the gold, silver and bronze medals.

GOLD can mean many things.

Did you know one of the major exports from South Africa is gold. In 2012 South Africa ranked 4 in the world for gold exports. South Deep gold mine is the largest gold mine in the world, by reserves. Located 45km south-west of Johannesburg in the Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa, South Deep is also the seventh deepest mine in the world, with a mine depth up to 2,998m below the surface.

In light of this information lets celebrate the color gold/yellow.  A personal favorite, sorry pink Bev and blue Glo.  We can make some incredible bright PJs that will liven up any blanket.

There are many things in nature that have a golden color; lions, a golden weaver, butterflies, a golden retriever, an ear of corn, summer squash, bananas, flowers and of course the sun.

Let’s think about gold and yellow in a new way so that we can share that brightness with the precious children that will be receiving KAS blankets soon.

Fabulous intro Amy. We need the beautiful sunny yellow and golds to cheer us all up. I love the colours in our  flag...they always make bright and cheerful blankets.

I will start with the flag of South Africa. This C2C block is 6 squares.

The warmest golden thing in the world is the sun.

This one has a little bit of texture, too.

Great intro, Amy :)  And your squares are beautiful.  I do so admire the C2C picture squares, and your flag is perfect.  I love that bright yellow sun on that incredibly gorgeous BLUE square :)  ... xo

Fabulous Amy - I love your bold colour use, especially the flag, very clever ❤️

Your intro is great Amy, some helpful ideas :))

Your sunshine square is bright and beautiful and you SA flag is fantastic, what a great start!

In the 2016 Olympics in Rio, South Africa took 10 medals in total. Their two golds were in track and field.  The Rugby team took the bronze.  Total Medal count 2 Golds, 6 Silvers and 2 Bronze.

That sunshine looks all the nicer after a miserable, cold and rainy day here in the UK.  It is July - someone tell the weather it is meant to be warm and sunny!

Love both of these, Amy.  The SA flag is awesome!  A child will love to find such special a square in their blanket ... xo

In 2016, Chad sent two athletes to the Olympics in Brazil.  One man and one woman competed in the Track and Field events.

This C2C block equals 6 squares.

Love your flag squares Amy, especially the SA one, also like the size.

Wonderful - such a bright and cheerful flag!

The Flag of Japan makes good use of our Pattern of the Month Wheel Spoke Pattern.

Japan is hosting its fourth Olympics, now in 2021.  Here is some history about the other three times.  One Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics:

Japan has been an enthusiastic participant in the Olympic Games since the Fifth
Olympiad, held in Stockholm, in 1912. Although Tokyo was eagerly promoted
as the site for the 1940 Games, they were canceled due to World War II. The hosting
of the 1964 Summer Olympics (Tokyo) and the 1972 Winter Olympics (Sapporo) were,
respectively, the first summer and winter games ever held in Asia. The 1998 Nagano
Winter Olympics marked the third time that Japan has hosted the games.
