GARDEN DELIGHTS - OCTOBER 2020 THEME
I am delighted to host another KAS monthly and there is something for everyone in this month's topic, Whatever your level of skill, let your imagination run riot with your choice of yarn, stitch, colour, pattern, texture, motif, and design to create squares, beanie hats, hand warmers and toys,
Here are just a few ideas to get your needles clicking, though members from the southern hemisphere will have their own interpretations of their gardens. Be inspired by the colours of nature. Remember that Plain Janes are the foundation of KAS blankets and we would love to reflect a riot of colour in the garden with both self-coloured squares and picture squares.
Some ideas:
- The obvious - flowers, plants, trees, lawns, leaves, soil, fruit & veg.
- Garden visitors – birds, bees, butterflies, ladybirds, hedgehogs, caterpillars, – perhaps hold a teddy bears’ picnic.
- Garden features - bird feeders, water features, sand pits, ponds, picnic tables, trellis, fences, paths, crazy paving, tubs, and window boxes.
- Tools of the trade – spades, forks, wheelbarrows, watering can.
Be inspired by a selection of squares made this year by KAS members.
Help to create a garden of delights to bring colour, cheerfulness and warmth into the children's lives.

Beautiful representations of these lovely flowers Susan. Nasturtiums remind me of my grandmother too Patricia and when I see them they always trigger fond memories.

Must have been something of the era....I remember the nasturtiums in my Grandma's garden, too.

She also always had Busy Lizzies lining the window sills, Chris. Is this something your grandmother did too?

Patricia, our grandmothers must be from the same era! My Nan would have Busy Lizzies in pots on windowsills both outdoors and indoors in her kitchen and bathroom. Under each pot she would use an old saucer, often relegated because of a crack or a chip. I remember the first year she had ‘double’ Busy Lizzies and double Begonias...... she thought they were wonderful!
She would also gather seeds from her Granny Bonnetts and share them with her neighbours, who would then share theirs with hers. Nan had a very small, pretty, colourful garden. She would be delighted if something grew that she hadn’t planted, I remember a bright yellow Snap Dragon, perhaps it arrived via a bird, she was thrilled!
There weren’t garden centres in those days (or money for plants), her garden’s colour was thanks to seeds and cuttings from relatives or neighbours and tender, loving care. Happy memories :))

I have enjoyed reading your nostalgic memories of flowers. We have geraniums and fuchsias on our kitchen window and they add a lovely splash of colour well into the winter.

I love fuchsias in tubs or in the garden, Susan, but I didn't realise they could be grown as house plants. My Mum's favourite indoor plant was the African Violet.

Yes, I remember the chipped saucers, Chris. Why did they have so many? Had the cups already got broken? Thank heavens for today's sturdy mugs!

While making a quick trip to the yarn store for the Leafy Garden blanket, this yarn called Purple Flowers jumped right into my cart, and wouldn't get back out again! So I grabbed a 2nd skein, just to keep it company. One skein made five squares, so I think it was a good purchase, especially for one like me, who only gardens with yarn.
P.S. I'm loving all the stories about your grandmother's gardens! So warm and comforting, just like a KAS blanket.
