Well, I did lay out the colors in advance, and worked my way through in order, then back again to create the almost-symmetrical look.  But, once that simple step is done, there's hardly any thinking involved.

I guessed it was 2 yarn cakes, from from outer edge + one from middle!  Your way sounds technically brilliant.  It's the sort of thing I do + hope no-one walks into the room to disturb the order, Tee-hee. I like to be able to spread myself out with a project like that.

I'm capable of messing up my own layout, LOL.   My trick is to lay them out on a table or even the floor, then take a picture with my phone.  Then I can put them into a basket that I work from, and I can check the picture when I need to find the next color.  It's not perfect, especially if two colors are close (as determined by the camera), but usually easy to figure out which skein comes next.

These squares were inspired by Gloria and Leanne who have written/spoken about their use of the "clever knot" (which I have never tried before). 

About a month ago my Mam gave me a bag containing leftovers of tapestry wool from kits (some skeins, some short lengths, all high wool content).    That weekend my Husband and Son commandeered our lounge for a mammoth retro-gaming session on our large TV, so I squirrelled myself away to master this joining knot.    I separated the tapestry wools into single strands and started randomly placing colours in my joining mission - to great success!!    I ended up with a ball around the size of a kiwi fruit, which I have combined with some 3ply wool to thicken it for DK use.    I calculated there was enough to knit almost 4 full squares, so have used some toning colours to help create this set of 5 squares.   I'm pretty chuffed with the results!

And chuffed you should be, Karen!!!  The results are beautiful, but mastering that knot and using it to "unite" so many little pieces is amazing.  Good for you, and soooooo well done... xo

Chuffed, Indeed.   These are wonderful squares.

I'm not sure what the 'clever knot' is, but I've used the magic knot for years and just love it for adding on yarn, whether a short length to use up or a new skein.   I think they might be the same thing, but I'll try to do some online research to see ... it is always good to learn a new technique.
