Well I did it!  I had a bag of "totally too short" yarn ends (I have a really hard time throwing yarn away :) and I decided to tie them all together and see what I could get out of it.  I got out my hooks and needles and started.  For the top left, I used my double-ended hook and cro-knit.  For the other two I used my swing needles.  The top right is just plain knit every row, and the bottom one is the swing knit ladders from the Members' Patterns.  

As I was tying the yarns together, I was really wondering how they were going to look.  Since with both these techniques you work from two balls of yarn, I put the darker yarns together in one ball and the lighter yarns together in another ball.  It worked out perfectly!  And it was FUN!  I didn't know what color was coming up next so it kept it interesting :))) xo

Lovely squares as always Gloria, and one of my favourite ways of using up odds and ends. From time to time I join all my short pieces of yarn together (usually with a weaver's knot or the Russian join - both on Youtube) and make a very large random ball. For those of us who don't have swing needles or have learnt cro-knit any ribby pattern will do - I like Helen's Six Stitch Rib pattern from the Pattern Book. This is so quick and every square is not only different but a surprise to the knitter which pleases my little mind. Thank you for reminding me Gloria, it's time I made another batch.

Thank you for these suggestions, Christine!  All great ideas.  I imagine all of us have little lengths of yarn that we just can't throw out, so this is a really good way (and this month is a good excues) to use them up :)

By the way, if you don't have swing needles but you still want to try the technique, you can use either circular needles or double-pointed needles :)))  I just like having the swing needles with the moveable ends to remind me which row I'm on (speaking of 'little minds" ... tee hee hee)  However, you can also use point protectors for the same purpose ... xo

Question for those more knowledgeable than I am.    When I tried Russian Join, it was very tricky to do, and then it pulled out!   Does it only work for wool or mostly-wool yarns?

I regularly use the Magic Knot (basically 2 square knots pulled together), and have never had one pull out when tied properly.   But the Russian Join defeats me.
