The April 2012 Challenge will be:

Flags of the World

Part of the beauty of the blankets that are made out of the squares we send to South Africa is the fact that in one blanket there may be squares from many countries of the earth.

We can celebrate this world, united through our handiwork, joined together into blankets.

The idea is to make squares inspired by flags. You don't necessarily have to replicate the flag - you can just make squares using the colors of the flag of your country, or "plain Jane" squares made with the colors of the flag, or of the flag of a country you love for any reason, or your best friend's home country, or the latest member of KAS's country.... anything!

And, of course, squares celebrating the beautiful colors of the flag of South Africa are always a hit!

Most flags are made from what I call "crayon colors", so I'm hoping these are colors that most people have in their yarn stash, and you won't have to go out to buy new wool.... ;-)

There are many many flags we can find inspiration in - google "world flags" and you can find lists, images and games! Here's an image I hope will give you a start:

You guys have knocked me out with all your creativity! I just had to sit down and make some Plain Jane squares.

The colors didn't come out quite right - the one top right is green not teal, and the one lower right is red not orange.

Two squares in the blue and white of St. Andrews Cross, the Scottish flag.

I am learning so much about the different flags from this challenge and the colours are all such fun. I keep thinking of different places I have some connection to (however tenuous!) so that I can find out what the flag looks like! There are some really brilliant squares being made.

I only managed to make these 2 today.  Spent most of the day sifting through 200plus spam messages.  Phew!!!!!

Sue Gillman replied : Sorry you had so much spam trouble. 2 in a day and they look great !!

Amazing, Sue! Really wonderful!

What a superb job you have done with these, Sue...just gorgeous!!!

They are gorgeous. How lovely to see some inventive knitted ones - the textures in the Rwandan one really make it and I love the use of diagonals.

Wow Sue, these are fantastic!!  Bravo to you for doing Sicily... I looked at the flag and moved on... how ever did you do the logo in the centre??  I am working on the Czech Republic too....  I see we have used a similar technique...  it took my dim-witted brain a while to figure out how to do the triangle.and in the end I did what you did... made the flag in pieces.  Wonderful job on all of them!!!

These are absolutely stunning,Sue!

Feeling blue...(not sad... light blue!!)    Greece. Solomon Islands, Tanzania, Argentina

Black and white for St Piran's flag for Cornwall (the square is really squarer than it appears-my cat was helping me take photos!)

Oh my gosh Sue! That's super! You are soooo talented!
