In the fall of 2018 we asked our volunteers in the KAS Barn what they would like to see as monthly themes for the coming year.  They came up with A Slice of Africa for February.

This month we want you to explore Africa, maybe be inspired by the designs and colors in African fabrics and beadwork.

Take a peak at traditional housing and cooking implements.

Maybe you can work up some squares or toys like these that embrace the flora and fauna that is unique to Africa or commonly found in Africa.

Every year we like to have a theme that also focuses on Mandela Day in July.  If we prepare our squares and ship them early enough, they can be made into blankets for our special Mandela Day Distributions in July.

Nelson Mandela, Inaugural Address, Pretoria 9 May 1994 after being elected President of South Africa

We enter into a covenant that we shall build a society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without and fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.

We can't wait to see what our crafters come up with this year.

The KAS Pattern for the month is the Wheel Spoke by Linda Maltby.

If you crochet why don't you give it a try.

Amy, I love your intro, so many wonderful photos (and quote) to inspire, thank you!

Great intro, Amy. I've learned quite a lot about SA last month, browsing Pinterest for African patterns for this theme, it's been very interesting.

Amy, what a vibrant and colorful intro you have created!!!  Extremely insprational with something for everyone.  I can just imagine the beauty our talented crafters will be creating this month ... xo

When I saw this yarn I immediately thought of the South African beadwork bracelet I had sitting unused in a box, so I decided that a child might enjoy finding it in a blanket.........

(The colours in the blanket photo appear darker and not as vibrant as they actually are)

Wow! A wonderful blanket, and a brilliant interpretation of the theme - and the bracelet is the perfect finishing touch. Well done. Chris!

This blanket is bang on target for the theme, well done Chris x

Boy Chris, you were right about this yarn.  It is fabulous.

Thank you so much for starting off our theme so brilliantly.

Love the little applique in the middle, too.

Just awesome, Chris - definitely a Slice of Africa!

Yes, Chris, I agree with everybody else. You've already set the bar pretty high for this month!

Christine you have captured Africa in those stunning blankets.

Chris, I'm speechless (and for me, that's sayin' something ... hahaha)  Your blanket is gorgeous, and the addition of the bracelet applique is the perfect loving touch ... xo

A very special blanket, Christine. Your bracelet was an inspired idea. The colours are perfectly matched.
