A SAFARI THROUGH AFRICA

This month we will travel across the continent of Africa with most of our attention on South Africa.

We will explore the treasures of the Egyptian pyramids, the wonders of the Okavango Delta, the majesty of Victoria Falls, the flowing waters of the Nile River, the smells and colors of a Moroccan Bazaar, the sands of the Sahara Desert, the snow capped mountains of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the beauty of our beloved South Africa.

Our squares, blankets, toys, hand-warmers and beanies can show us the colors of this continent from the people...

...to the animals...

...to flags...

...and designs...

In past years, Knit a Square has had many distributions on Mandela Day, July 18. We try to have many blankets and items that focus on South Africa, animals, colors and culture.  Our theme is early enough so that we can post our items to be included in this special event.

Since gold can be found in many of the countries in Africa our Color of the Month (COM) is gold/yellow.  Our Pattern of the Year is the Plain Jane, a square of one solid color, usually made with a single crochet or a garter stitch, but they can also be made with other textured stitches.

Well, Gloria, I can't find my copy of the pattern right now to check my notes ... (I was cleaning and organizing, and now ... well, you can guess the rest.)   But if memory serves, I worked the pattern rows all the way through once, then looked at which side needed the extra bump to bring it up to a straight edge, worked those rows, and when it seemed straight and the right length, bound off.

I used worsted weight yarn (not sure of the British or Australian equivalent, maybe aran? 8 ply?  10 ply?) and a 5mm needle.  And I knit just barely on the tight side of gauge.

8 garter stitch squares in Bonus Buzz, in Okapi and Antelope colours.

You have been a terrific, informative and attentive host Amy, Well Done and Thank you X

Amazing !!

Brilliant animal colours, Karen.

Wow, I love this yarn.  I may have to hunt it down here in the States.

Thanks for reminding us of that elusive Okapi.  I must return to Africa to see one in person.

I have 6 balls of green tones, 3 balls of purple/brown/blue colours and 7 balls in pinks...... One day I'll get around to using them, there's just not enough clicking going on to get through all my stash at once (unfortunately).   It's not an easy one to get hold of here regularly, so I bought so much when I saw it less than £2 per ball.  That's my excuse anyway.... Tee-hee...

LOVE the Okapi and Antelope squares, Karen.   And, good job on stocking up on yarn while it was a bargain.   I sometimes feel a bit guilty when I do that, but my husband never feels that way.   He sees that I do use up the yarn I buy, even if it takes awhile to get it all done.  And it keeps the children a little bit warmer and maybe a bit happier, too.   So, keep up the good work!

Fabulous squares Sharon.

Fantastic African  colours Karen.

LOVE this yarn, Karen. The colourways are just GORGEOUS!!  xo

Amy thank you for such an informative month...you have taught me things about Africa that I was not aware of as our History has changed so much in the last 26 years.
I hope you don’t mind but I’d love to share this with all of you and thank you for your ongoing support.

Thank you for sharing this lovely, evocative poem with us Estelle x
