July is always a special month in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first black South African to hold the office. Mandela spent 27 years in jail for his anti-apartheid activities, finally being released in 1990. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.He is held in deep respect within South Africa as the "Father of the Nation" and is often known under his Xhosa clan name of Madiba
Mandela Day, July 18, the day of his birthday, has become an international day of recognition this great man.
Madiba said “it is an occasion when each of us takes a step, through some act of community, to realize the power in us to change the world”
Around the world, people recognize Mandela day by devoting 67 minutes of their time – one minute for every year of Mr. Mandela’s public service – by making a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.
KAS in South Africa will be having a special event to mark this day. Here on the forum, we could do it by devoting 67 minutes to making a square, posting it here, and naming our country. Wendy will be registering both events on the Mandela Day website.
As we honour Mandela this day, you might want to choose symbols of peace, love or freedom for your Mandela Day squares….. or rainbow colours to represent The Rainbow Nation of South Africa.
Africa is such a colourful continent that it offers lots of scope for wonderful squares. I hope our Plain Jane square-makers will bombard us with squares in a riot of colours - You might want to use the S.A. flag for inspiration - green, blue, red, yellow, black and white
Some folks might want to use the marvellous South African fabrics for ideas.
Some of you creative souls will want to try special squares featuring the wildlife or African flowers. Remember - these are for children, so simple childlike shapes are perfect.
I hope everyone will have fun with this challenge – I know the children will enjoy these squares because they will identify with the African themes.
Please remember to record the squares you make in THE DRIVE TO FILL RONDA’S KASVAN at http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/the-drive-to-fill-ronda...
Once again, our Gitta has stepped up and offered to create an album for this Challenge. You can find it at

I have just done these zebra-themed loom-knit squares!
Also, I was sent this link to The Rainbow Song, I really like it:

The Rainbow Song, performed by Memeza African Choir featuring Marika Hattingh and a group of international musicians, is a celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and work, and tribute to his contribution to world peace and reconciliation. Income from sales of the song will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Edzimkulu and charities approved by the Nelson Mandela Foundation dedicated to improving the life of children worldwide.

Article about Tigers and Africa. A very interesting read. http://www.livescience.com/32866-no-tigers-in-africa.html
I accepted Bev's challenge to make the Africa square, knowing that her work-woman-ship is many steps above mine, but it is really about making squares for the children.
Now I must apologize to anyone associated with this wonderful pattern (Julie Kempton, the designer, especially). Sometimes things just don't seem to work very well. LOL... I've used these exact yarns with these exact needles before and it was fine, but for some reason, this square looks very sloppy. I've blocked and steamed, but the stitches still look awful....nonetheless, here it is.
(I used 4mm needles with 8 ply yarn (light worsted or DK), cast on 40 stitches, did 4 border stitches-graph-4 border stitches, and got a slightly generous 8 inch square.)
I will keep practicing, and some year, I will be able to knit a stockinette stitch that doesn't make me cringe.
Earlier in the challenge, I tried to depict Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom with footprints in a square -- another one of those ideas that didn't work out quite as planned ... LOL (this must be the month for that in my household).
Robin Monsees came to my rescue with a much better footprint pattern, so here is my 2nd attempt at the Long Walk to Freedom. BIG thank you to Robin....The colors in this square are much better in person, not quite so dull ... must be the gray and stormy weather we are having.
I left the toes free so the children could play with them, count them, or whatever ... is that a good idea or a bad idea?

"CreateCare Global has set itself two tasks. The first is physical: to bring hope, support and comfort to children for whom poverty and loss are everyday tormentors. The second, and in our view equally important, is to spread the message to the world."
Our thanks to CreateCare Global for supporting the Square Circle Forum and helping to spread the wonderful work that KAS does.
