Well done everyone! The figures continue to grow year-on-year. They represent hours of caring, kindness and giving by a 'global family' of yarn workers! The January Jewel Challenge is already getting the squares & hats flowing!
Below are the totals (so far) for 2011 - once the square lists for Nov & Dec are published I'll continue to update these figures - which are a combination of Forum totals and the Square List (which only lists Squares, Hats, Vests & Sweaters) plus Ravelry keeps it own list. In fact, more is being sent, but at least the figures below will give a fair idea.
6229 hats
755 sweaters/jumpers
19 baby blankets
68 kascuddles
15 prs gloves
254 slipovers/ pullovers

That's fabulous Laurie, just fantastic! :D Thanks so much for spreading the word...I'll go mention your efforts over in the thread about "spreading the word". :)
Absolutely awesome Laurie! This is thrilling to read. More people all the time reaching out to orphans in love.
Wow! Laurie, this is fantastic. You're a star!
Thanks so much Bev and Jeanne, but you are the stars, you and everyone else here! I am just so happy to have found you and to be a part of this amazing community!
Have taken the recently published December & January Square Lists, stripped out the Forum contributors and added the figures from KasFolk who do not add their items to the Forum tally. You'll be pleased to see the square total rise substantially to reflect a truer picture of the squares, hats, sweaters & vests being sent to South Africa from around the globe. Please note the Squillion Count started in July 2011.

My daughter and I learned to crochet for this project, and we are sending 50 squares tomorrow. Some were felted sweaters, but the majority were crocheted! FYI for any Canadian participants - we managed to fit 50 squares in a large envelope that will be qualify for a "small packet" rate with Canada Post at just under 2 kg. Total cost to mail will be about $30, with tax. This is why we stopped @ 50, for now, but we'll be back!

Congratulations to you and your daughter! What an accomplishement!!
I appreciate the mailing info too, since I'm Canadian! :)
I hear you bricoleuse...I'm taking a "break" from postage right now by working on a slipover, those soft vests. It will take me a while but someone gave me a LOT of Caron Simply Soft yarn in 6 oz skeins, like 6 of them! So, that eases the whimpering from my wallet, lol, as I work on something that takes more time. :)
I just packaged up 6 sweaters to send to South Africa!
